Volvo looks to link up with Tan Chong
teamcar - Sweden-based truck maker AB Volvo is looking at forging cooperation with the local distributor of Nissan diesel vehicles, following its recent acquisition of a 13% stake in Japan-based Nissan Diesel Motor Co.
Executive vice-president Jorma Halonen said that as a new major shareholder in Nissan Diesel, the group was focusing on improving efficiency in the distribution network and after-sales of vehicles and how it could play a role in supporting the local distribution.
Nissan Diesel vehicles are assembled and distributed in Malaysia by Tan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd through a franchise arrangement.
Volvo, the world's number two truck maker, early this year bought the stake in Nissan Diesel for about US$195mil – with an option to buy up to 6% more – to strengthen its Asian operations.

Malay car dealers want Approved Permit system retained
teamcar - THE Malay Car Importers and Dealers Association (Pekema) - which groups more than 200 firms - is to submit a White Paper soon to the Government, hoping to preserve the Approved Permit (AP) system beyond 2010.
Under the new National Automotive Policy (NAP) announced on March 22, APs will be phased out in stages and completely abolished in 2010.
Pekema president Datuk Abdul Hamid Ibrahim hopes the Government will change its mind after considering how Bumiputeras have performed in the car distribution sector for the past 30 years.
"We have been working on the White Paper for the past three months. Our presentation is not based on emotional grounds, but on the commercial success in terms of Bumiputera participation in the automotive distribution sector.
"For the past 30 years, we have experienced ups and downs without much help from other parties," Abdul Hamid said in an interview with Business Times recently.

Petronas to build SEA’s first Group III Base oil plant
teamcar -Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) on Sept 22 held a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of its Group III lubricant base oil plant, the first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia.
The plant, located within the Petronas Refinery Complex in Malacca, is scheduled to come onstream in 2008, Petronas said in a statement on Sept 22.
It will have the capacity to produce 6,500 barrels per day or about 300,000 tonnes per year of Group III base oils, which is a major component in the manufacture of top-tier energy-conserving automotive and industrial lubricants.
The plant will use high-wax feedstock to be sourced from Petronas' refineries in Melaka and Kertih, which will then be further refined at the new base oil plant into Group III base oils.
The finished product will be marketed under the ETRO brand to higher-end lubricant makers to produce energy-conserving engine oils increasingly favoured by car manufacturers.
The project is being implemented by Petronas Penapisan (Melaka) Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petronas. (source-

Proton says will not sell Lotus unit
teamcar - Proton Holdings Bhd will not sell its unit Lotus even if things get tough, Proton's group managing director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said.
'We will make sure that Lotus will work. We must ensure Lotus is a success; there is no other way,' Syed said.He said that Proton will have to make radical changes soon in the UK-based sports car maker. One of the first priority will be 'rightsizing' the company, he said.
This is in addition to other cost saving measures outlined in its business turnaround plan. Group Lotus has embarked on a five-year strategic plan which aims for growth in the company's engineering business as its pursues strategic pacts with other auto firms.
Proton and Group Lotus announced earlier this week that Lotus will cut jobs at its plant in Hethel, Norfolk, with British reports saying some 200 jobs would be lost out of its workforce of 1,200.
Malaysia's Proton subsidiary Lotus to cut jobs, introduce 3 new car models
teamcar - Malaysia's loss-making national automaker Proton said Thursday its British-based high-performance subsidiary Lotus would cut jobs by year's end to reduce costs and introduce three new car models in the next five years.
Sagging local sales of Proton cars have seen the company's share of the local market dwindle from nearly one in every two cars on Malaysian roads to just over 30 percent.
"Proton, together with the management of Group Lotus, is determined to see that the strategic plans, company realignment and expansion of model range will positively redefine how the business is carried out," said Proton managing director Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.
Lotus chief executive officer Michael Kimberly said in a statement it plans to pursue cost-cutting measures "as a short-term measure to strengthen the company's efficiency and finances to ensure that Lotus contributes effectively to the Proton group."
Proton's second quarter losses, ending in June, stood at 58.6 million ringgit (US$16 million; €12.62 million) compared with a loss of 12.4 million ringgit in the same period a year earlier. Revenue also dipped by 31 percent on year.
The statement, issued on both Proton's and Lotus' Web sites, said the Norfolk-based company would "right-size" its workforce via a voluntary exercise by the end of 2006. It did not elaborate.
"This will mean that a leaner, more cost effective and efficient Lotus will be far more globally competitive and realigned for business growth," Kimberley said in the press release.
In 2004, Lotus employed around 1,400 people, according to the Web site of GlobalExpense, a company tasked with managing Lotus' employee expenses.
Last week, France's Peugeot-Citroen SA said it would explore possible cooperation with Proton, giving it a better footing in the highly competitive Asian market.
Proton, which is under pressure to boost its sales and return to profit by revamping its model lineup, has also said it was talking with China's Chery Automobile Co. about building and selling each other's cars in China and Southeast Asia. Proton also has a technology alliance with Japanese automaker Mitsubishi.
Kimberley said a new Lotus/Proton high-performance vehicle is targeted for launch in mid-2008 followed by a mid-range model in December 2008. Its iconic Esprit model, featured in two James Bond movies, is undergoing a revamp and will be unveiled the following year.
No sales targets were provided.
Proton is under heavy pressure from foreign carmakers as well as local rivals. Second national carmaker Perodua, part-owned by Japan's Daihatsu Motor Co. Ltd., has so far outsold Proton in Malaysia for the first time ever this year.
M'sia may retaliate against Thailand's car tariff stance
teamcar - The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (Miti) may retaliate against Thailand's decision not to lower tariffs for car imports from Malaysia from 20% now, minister Datuk Seri Rafidah Aziz said.
“If Thailand does not comply with what is provided for, we will be forced to retaliate and I am now looking, with my officers, on measures on how to retaliate,” she said.
Nonetheless, Rafidah said Miti was willing to continue talks with its Thai counterparts. She added that the military coup in Thailand would not affect discussions.
“That’s their own internal problems. We are dealing with the bureaucracy, and we will continue to discuss and look at it.
"But as I have said, we are very firm in our position and we are looking to retaliate should Thailand not give CEPT (Common Effective Preferential Tariff) treatment for our products,” she added.
It has been reported that talks between officials of both countries in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday had failed to end the impasse over the car tariff row.
Savvy makes national fuel economy record
teamcar - Proton Holdings Bhd’s Savvy compact car made it into the Malaysia Book of Records for travelling 1,614km journey through West Malaysia on 1.75 tanks of petrol, setting a fuel economy record for a standard showroom vehicle above 1,000cc.
Fitted with a 40-litre capacity fuel tank, the Savvy used 68.08 litres of fuel – about RM130.71 at the pump – or an average fuel consumption of 4.22 litres per 100km. The car travelled through all 11 states on the Peninsula in all road conditions.
In a statement on Sept 19, Proton said the one-year-old Savvy was designed to be fuel economical while being both dynamic and practical. The record-making feat, it added, also showed the durability of the car.
The company’s media and public relations executive Gary Lee said: “It’s a practical demonstration of what the car is capable of. It was also timely to demonstrate to our customers the car is fuel economical.”
“In general all the cars in that category, small compact city cars, target fuel economy as one of their main criteria. But, by doing this we can show what the car can do instead of talking about it,” he added.
Proton And PSA Peugeot Citroen Plan To Form Partnership
teamcar - Proton Holdings Bhd and Europe's second largest car maker, PSA Peugeot Citroen, have signed a letter of intent (LOI) to study possible cooperation between the two automobile manufacturers.Proton said in a statement Monday that the LOI was signed between its managing director, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, and PSA Peugeot's chief executive officer Jean-Martin Folz on Sept 15, 2006.The study, which is expected to last several months, will focus on a number of diverse areas such as product development, manufacturing, quality initiatives, vendor development, contract assembly and distribution, the national car maker said."The areas being studied will focus on offering benefits to both parties in the Asean region and elsewhere," it said. The study has a number of objectives with Proton's goal being to leverage the technologies expertise of a major global automobile manufacturer in areas such as product development and quality improvement while at the same time optimising the capacity utilisation of its plant. For PSA Peugeot Citroen, the agreement, in line with the group's strategy of cooperating with other car manufacturers, is expected to increase sales of Peugeot and Citroen vehicle in Malaysia and serve as a foundation for developing business in the Asean region.-- BERNAMA
BMW to introduce first hydrogen-powered luxury car
teamcar - German automaker BMW AG plans to introduce the world’s first hydrogen-powered luxury performance car.
Know as the Hydrogen 7, the car will be built in a limited edition in Europe and will eventually be sold in the U.S. market, the company said in a statement last week. No date has been set for U.S. sales.
The car is equipped with an internal combustion engine capable of running on either hydrogen or gasoline and is based on BMW’s 7 Series. If run on gasoline, the car’s gas mileage will be 15 miles per gallon in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.
Hydrogen technology minimizes emissions of carbon dioxide. Running in the hydrogen mode, the Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but vapor, BMW said.
Other automakers, such as Volkswagen AG, Audi AG and Porsche AG have previously said they plan to develop hybrid engines.
Proton sales in Britain Surge 48%
Teamcar - Proton Holdings Bhd has seen a surge in car sales in Britain as the number of cars sold from January to last month is 48% higher at 1,702 compared with the 1,148 sold in the same period in 2005.
The company said in a statement that for August, sales were up 79% although the private buyer segment saw sales dip by 10%.
Proton UK general sales and marketing manager Simon Park was reported to have said that a growing dealer network, and the Savvy and ongoing advertising campaigns had resulted in the increase in sales this year. (THE STAR)
Getting Malaysia's car Industry Moving Again
Teamcar - WHEN vehicles are choking roads and expressways, it means the automotive sector and the economy are doing well. But when they choke up showrooms and stockyards, something is wrong.
Automotive market watchers estimate there are some 120,000 unsold new vehicles lying in showrooms and yards across the country. About half are of the Proton make.
Proton Edar Dealers' Association (Peda) said Proton Holdings Bhd has 404 sales and service dealers who sold an average of 8,000 cars a month in the first six months of this year.
The 404 sales and service centres are owned by 198 Peda member companies, Proton Edar, Edaran Otomobil Nasional Bhd (EON) and EON dealers. They have each lost about RM20,000 a month in the January to June 2006 period.
Peda said that if the situation persists, about 30 per cent of its members will be out of business by the year-end.
Several suggestions have been bandied about as to how the problem can be solved. They include scrapping vehicles older than 15 years, doing away with the maximum RM600 handling fee for car dealers, exporting reconditioned cars and rationalising Proton's big sales and service network.

New models set to crank up car sales
Teamcar - Motor vehicle sales for the first half of the year were down but that is not stopping the car industry from wrenching up marketing efforts to boost sales.
Several new models are slated for launch and the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) is hopeful this would lift vehicle sales by the year-end.
Vehicle sales are projected to dip 6% from 551,042 units sold last year, reversing the previous eight consecutive years of sales growth.
Industry observers say there could be four to six models launched before the end of the year, but it would depend on the strategies adopted by the motor players.
“Some auto players are adopting a 'wait and see' approach and might possibly hold back their model launches depending on their competitors' strategies,” an observer said.
Perodua was expected to roll out its Kancil replacement model in the first or second quarter next year, an analysts said, adding that Proton might possibly have lined up some replacement models. And UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd is expected to bring in the Lexus by year-end.
The analyst viewed this period as consumers adopting a “wait and see” stance, possibly expecting value of vehicles to rise. “But once they accept the reality of the situation, they will return to their regular buying patterns,” he said. (The Star)
Reduction of traffic fines postponed
TEAMCAR - The Cabinet has decided to postpone the reduction of traffic fines by the police.
In announcing this after the weekly Cabinet meeting, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said that the Cabinet agreed that compounds imposed on traffic offenders, especially for serious faults, should be a deterrent.
"The Cabinet feels that the compounds must act as a kind of deterrent, and not a source of revenue for the Government. We feel there is a need to convey the right message on road safety to these offenders.
"The Cabinet also feels there should be more coordination among the different enforcement agencies on this matter," he said, adding that he had also been directed to chair a meeting to specifically discuss the decision taken by the police to reduce the traffic fines.
The meeting would be attended by the police, officials from the Road Transport, and Road Safety Departments and the Internal Security Ministry.
"It will also address issues such as the streamlining of traffic fines imposed by the different enforcement agencies," Chan said.
On Monday, Internal Security and Public Order Director Commissioner Datuk Mustafa Abdullah had announced that the police would slash traffic fines by as much as RM200 to encourage offenders to pay up. (The Star)
Proton to speed up revival plan
Teamcar - PROTON Holdings Bhd will have a concrete plan before the year ends on how to turn itself around, and decide on whether it will have local or foreign investors as a partner.
The manufacturer of Proton cars is speeding up efforts to finalise its revival plan, Second Finance Minister Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop said.
Nor Mohamed said the Government has not seen any proposal from either the Naza Group or DRB-HICOM Bhd to buy the 43 per cent stake owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd in Proton as reported in the Edge weekly recently.
"No, I have not seen any," he told reporters after launching Bursa Malaysia's Corporate Social Responsibility Framework for public-listed companies in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
The report said there was talk that the Naza Group has submitted a proposal to buy Khazanah's stake in Proton as early as last year and that DRB-HICOM had also put in a similar plan recently.
Proton recently lost its pole position as Malaysia's top car seller to Perodua and has since come under pressure to release new models to compete and return to profitability.
Its net loss widened to RM58.7 million in the first quarter to June, from RM12.4 million the same period last year.
It blamed the loss to a decline in total car sales and the lack of new models during the period, as it transitions to several new models starting in 2007.
Sales were further affected by stricter loan terms, higher interest rates and lower used-car values which means potential customers have had to come up with more cash upfront to purchase new cars.
Lower Fines For Traffic Offence

Perodua Enter Used Car Market
TEAMCAR - Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) will venture into the used- car business in about a year to complement its car manufacturing business, its managing director Syed Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar (pic) said.
“We have been studying the used-car business over the last one year and I have made several trips to Osaka and Tokyo to look into their second-hand and vehicles auction concept that draws international buyers,” he told FinancialDaily in an interview.
He said the venture into the used-car business is a natural progression for Perodua. “In the matured markets, you will see the same thing happening in Malaysia, there will be fewer and fewer first- time buyers of new cars,” he said.
However, Syed Hafiz believes that the timing is not right at the moment for the company to launch its used-car business, especially with the high overhang of second-hand cars and non-performing loans (NPLs).
Syed Hazif said Perodua will continue with its policy of introducing one new model every year from last year until 2010 with the exception of this year due to the long waiting list for Myvi.
It has managed to reduce the waiting period for Myvi from five months to three months currently.
Perodua has also embarked on a RM300 million expansion of its plant in Sungai Choh, near Rawang, to boost its annual production capacity to 205,000 units by year-end and to 240,000 by the third quarter of 2007 from 200,000 units now.
Syed Hafiz said Perodua will also build five more branch showrooms, one each in Seremban, Melaka, Penang, Kota Damansara and the Kajang-Bangi area, bringing the total to 40. It has 139 dealers nationwide.

Assemblyman loses car after attending N-day parade
TEAMCAR - Bandar Hilir state assemblyman Goh Leong San lost his 12-year-old Nissan Sunny parked at Melaka Raya on National Day.
Goh, 39, who is also state DAP chairman, returned to Jalan Taman TMR 3 after attending the Merdeka parade at Bandar Hilir but could not find his car.
“I parked my car along the street and walked to Bandar Hilir to attend the parade as all the parking lots near the parade place were taken up," Goh said.
He lodged a police report at the Melaka Tengah police station immediately after that.
Goh said the car was only worth RM10,000 and was he was amazed that thieves were interested in his old car.
Melaka Tengah district CID chief Supt Dennis Lim confirmed the theft on Friday and said police were on the lookout for the car.
