Fully imported from Japan, where it was launched back in February, the ASX (Active Smart X-over) is designed to offer the practicality and elevated seating position of an SUV along with the ride comfort and handling of a sedan—all in a “Smart Size” package smaller than conventional mid-size SUVs such as Honda CR-V and Hyundai Tucson.
The ASX shares not only the same platform as the Lancer, but the same powertrain as well: the 2.0-litre 4B11 engine mated to the INVECS-III CVT with six-step Sports mode, which can be engaged via magnesium steering paddles. Tuned for use in an SUV, the engine produces 150 hp and 197 Nm compared with 155 hp and 199 Nm in the Lancer. The front-wheel-driven ASX comes with hydraulic-assisted steering plus MacPherson strut/multi-link (front/rear) suspension setup for improved handling.
