Honda Malaysia recalls '09 Honda City and '09/'10 Honda Jazz

17 February 2011 - Honda Malaysia has announced a recall for 21,956 units of the 2009 Honda City and 1680 units of the 2009/2010 Honda Jazz. This is obviously part of the massive global recall that is affecting about 700,000 cars made by the Japanese manufacturer.

Both the third generation City, which made its debut at the Istanbul Motor Show in October 2008, and the 2009 to 2010 Jazz (known as the Fit in some markets) need replacements for the lost motion springs. Over time, the mechanical stresses created by being compressed by the rocker arms may result in bending or breaking of the springs. This would then create an abnormal engine noise, plus possible engine stalls and problems re-starting.

Honda Malaysia is currently sourcing and preparing the replacement parts needed for the repair, and will notify all the customers once the parts are ready. The inspection and part replacement will be free-of-charge. Thankfully, neither the 2011 City nor the 2011 Jazz carries the mechanical problem, as Honda Malaysia is eager to emphasize. The company is carrying out the replacement as part of a global Honda Motor Company strategy to ensure that stringent quality standards are met for its products.

The City and Jazz are powered by a 1.4-liter i-VTEC engine that provides a mix between performance, flexibility and fuel economy. The unit provides around 100 hp in both models, a 17 hp increase over the previous generation. In the case of the City, it helps the car complete the 0-100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) sprint in just 11.8 seconds for the manual version, an improvement of 1.6 seconds over the previous generation.
